2018 Audi Q5 India launch

Audi Q5, when launched for the first time in India, was accepted warmly by the market. Popularity of the SUV rose quickly and the Q5 soon became the highest-selling SUV in its segment in the country. In 2013, Audi India sold more than 10,000 vehicles, primarily driven by the success of the Q5. However, with time the Q5 lost its edge and new competitors soon began to eat into its market share. Sales not only went down for Q5 but Audi India too witnessed shrinking sales and 2017 saw them selling less than 8,000 vehicles. This puts them behind BMW and Mercedes-Benz, which is a spot Audi certainly isn’t pleased to be in. In order to rectify that the first launch of this 2018 comes from Audi and it’s none other than the Q5.
Audi will today launch the all-new Q5 in India and we recently drove it in Rajasthan. A lot has changed in the new Audi Q5 and most of it checks the right boxes. However, the Q5’s fight to reclaim the top spot won’t be easy as it’ll have to compete against the Mercedes-Benz GLC, new Volvo XC60 and the upcoming BMW X3. Most importantly, the new Q5’s success will depend on how competitively Audi India prices it. With just a short time to go for the launch of the new Audi Q5, here are live updates from the launch event along with important information fro our drive of the Q5, wherein we tell you if it’s good enough to take the fight to its competitors.

11:48 am: Editor’s speak on 2018 Audi Q5: “Overall, the new Q5 retains the subtlety of its predecessor but adds a bit of dynamism and athleticism to the package. The new 2018 Audi Q5 now comes across as a more mature, refined and sophisticated SUV. Some people might be disappointed by the lack of an all-new design but the understated looks of the Q5 have been a strong consideration factor for Indian buyers so there is a chance the new Q5 might strike the right chords.”

11:45 am: We also managed to some good off-roading with the new generation Audi Q5 in Rajasthan. Here’s a complete video review of the Audi’s latest SUV.

11:40 am: The new-gen Audi Q5 is based on the the same MLB Evo platform that underpins the current-gen Audi Q7. The use of this platform has helped Audi Q5 SUV to grow in size and at the same times has managed to lose about 100 kilograms. Extensive use of aluminium and carbon fibre has helped in losing the weight of the new Audi Q5.

11:32 am: 2018 Audi Q5 is Audi India’s first launch of 2018 and the company will now build its product portfolio to gain the lost ground in the Indian market. In 2017, Audi India sold a total of 7,876 units seeing the company taking the third rank in the Indian luxury car segment behind BMW India and Mercedes-Benz India.

11:15 am:  The new Audi Q5 gets the full-colour MIDI with a live maps display like in the Audi A4 and the Audi Q7, this makes the entire driving experience in the Audi Q5 much safer considering the eyes-off-road time is tremendously reduced. The highlight of the HMI (Human Machine Interface) is the 12.3-inch HD colour display screen in the instrument cluster. Data such as navigation, speed, engine rpm, trip meters and more can be displayed on this screen in a customisable manner. This makes it possible for the driver to access all necessary information within his/ her field of view and without having to take off his/ her eyes off the road. The HD resolution makes it a treat to watch the screen and the 3D maps add life to the otherwise boring maps we’re used to seeing. The infotainment system supports Android Auto and Apple CarPlay but supports navigation from Android only.

11:05: am: “It’s almost a given that Audi vehicles are at par with global safety standards and the new Q5 follows the same approach. The SUV comes with a 5-star crash certification from Euro NCAP, testifying its crash-worthiness. Other key safety features include 8 airbags, ABS, ESP, Hill Descent Assist and TPMS (Tyre Pressure Monitoring System). There are parking assist sensors too along with a reversing camera but the display quality of this camera could have been better. From a perception perspective too the Q5 scores well as the doors close with a solid thud, giving the assurance of good build quality.” – From our review of the new Audi Q5

10:55 am: However, Audi India, for now has decided only to bring in the 2.0L TDI diesel version to India that has a maximum power output of 190 hp and 400 Nm of torque on the new Audi Q5.  The 2.0L diesel engine on the SUV is mated to a 7-Speed S-tronic gearbox.
