BMW is showcasing its fine craftsmanship at the Detroit Motor Show, one of them being the brand new crossover X2. First unveiled at Paris Motor Show in October last year, BMW X2 is the smallest crossover its the German marque’s lineup. One of the ways of instantly recognising a BMW X2 is that it picks ‘coupe-SUV’ styling cues from the larger X4 and X6, and the other way could be that it has one too many ‘BMW’ badges, four to be precise. Besides the large SUV stance like its elder siblings, BMW X2 will also be available with an M Sport X package.

Based on the BMW X1, the X2 will launch in the US market as xDrive28i, with turbo-four, and all-wheel-drive, on 3 March 2018. The US-spec X2 will produce 228 hp and 349.8 Nm of torque, rendering it capable of sprinting from 0-100 km/h in 6.3 seconds. It will launch in Europe with the sDrive20i, xDrive20d and xDrive25d. More engine and transmission combinations will follow.

The X2 is designed to slot in between the entry-level front-drive-based X1 and the larger X3, as a model that focuses more on style. BMW says the X2 is aimed towards younger buyers. Along with the standard X2, customers can also choose from the X2 M Sport and M Sport X models. The latter brings together design elements from BMW M and the BMW X family.

“The BMW X2 fuses the fast-moving forms of a coupe with the robust volumes of an X model. It was important to us to make these apparently conflicting aspects of the BMW X2 and the car’s individual character something you experience from every angle and at first glance,” says Thomas Sycha, Head of Design BMW Compact Class.

The newcomer looks remarkably similar to the Concept X2 that was showcased at 2016 Paris Motor Show. Since the X2 is lower, it is more of a hatchback thana coupe-SUV. The 470-litre boot is 35 litres smaller than the X1’s.

Available for the first time on a BMW are exterior colour shades Galvanic Gold metallic and Misano Blue metallic, plus perforated Dakota leather in Magma Red and the Micro Hexagon fabric Anthracite/Alcantara combination in Black with M piping and yellow contrast stitching.

The options list for the X2 includes the latest generation of BMW ConnectedDrive and the most recent update of the BMW Connected App. Optional functions such as Apple CarPlay and an array of driver assistance systems serve up a connected driving experience. Among the optional equipment features offered exclusively by the X2 in this segment is the full-colour BMW Head-Up Display.
