Volkswagen I.D. electric revealed early in Euro press

The Volkswagen I.D. concept car has been revealed early on the cover of a French magazine ahead of the car's debut at the Paris motor show this week.

Automarket, a Romanian website, has obtained and published the front cover of the latest edition of L'Automobile magazine.

The cover shows both the Renault Trezor concept and Volkswagen I.D. ahead of their official unveilings this week.

Apart from confirming the car's name, the advance image of the I.D. reveals a few more details about the concept. We can see that it marks a departure from design used on the rest of the Volkswagen range, with smooth, round styling broken up by a crisp shoulder line down the car's flanks.

There's also short front and rear overhangs, a tall people mover-style glasshouse, and rear-hinged back doors for easier ingress and egress.

The concept car was teased earlier this month, giving us a look at the car's headlights and much of its front fascia.

Head of the Volkswagen brand, Herbert Diess, told Wirtschafts Woche last month that the I.D. would be dimensionally similar to the Golf, but have the interior space of a Passat.

The all-electric I.D. is said to have a range of between 400 and 600 kilometres, with a fast recharge possible within 15 minutes.

A production version of the I.D. will reportedly start trundling down the manufacturing line in either 2018 or 2019. As part of the company's pivot towards electric cars in the wake of the Dieselgate scandal, the I.D. will be the first of a clutch of vehicles to use the Volkswagen Group's new MEB modular electric toolkit.
